Conversations and Connections is a one-day writer's conference that brings together writers, editors, and publishers in a friendly, supportive environment. Register here: https://www.barrelhousemag.com/conference
Our Panel: No, Really When Do You Write? Parents Writing (& Sometimes Not) with Kids
How and when do you find time to write as parents? Four busy parents with kids aged 4 to 18 discuss when they write and what tools they use (calendars, residencies, patience, flexibility, workshop groups, classes, etc.), as well as what has changed as their kids grow. They will also address accepting when it isn't possible to write (snow days, illness, etc.) and how to face pauses in writing.
Panelists: Hayes Davis, Yvette Neisser, and myself
Vantage Points: Women Artists and the Landscape Closing Reception
The closing reception for Vantage Points: Women Artists and the Landscape will include a vibrant poetry reading from DC-area poets with a focus on themes of nature and ecology to enhance our engagement with the artwork in the show. Poets participating include Chole Yelena Miller, Indran Amirthanayagam, Sara Burnett, Majda Gama and others. We hope you can join this special collaborative event!
The Terror and the Miraculous: Writing and Living in Difficult Times
In the poem "Primary Source," Sara R. Burnett writes, “I’ve a better understanding of terror / and the miraculous.” In this time of great global and personal challenges, how do we write and live both the terror and the miraculous? Poet Sara R. Burnett and therapist Rachel Noble will discuss how to approach both as writers and humans. Burnett will read poems on the subject and Noble will offer some ways to find personal power in the face of fears. You’ll have a chance to pose your own questions in the Q&A.
How the Sausage Gets Made: Debut Poets on Making a First Book
We all dream of holding our first published book, bound and beautiful, in our hands. But how does that stack of printed-out pages on your desk turn into a finished book? Four debut poets from a range of backgrounds will offer detailed, transparent recountings of their journeys to a debut collection, addressing questions of manuscript preparation, publishing process, complications encountered, and post-publication advice. Audience Q&A will follow the presentations.

Digging In: The Fertile Soil of Myth (San Diego)
In this event, poet Sara Burnett will read from her book Seed Celestial, winner of the 2021 Autumn House Press Poetry Prize. Burnett’s poetry draws upon ancient Greco-Roman myths and the myth-making experience of her childhood as the daughter of a Cuban exile. Her work grapples with timeless questions of origin, change, death, and rebirth while exploring the fraught political, racial, and ecological landscapes of our time. In Seed Celestial, Burnett reflects on feminism, gun violence, motherhood, and climate change while simultaneously paying homage to De Rerum Natura (“On the Nature of Things”) a Latin epic poem about the universe written by the Roman poet Lucretius more than 2,000 years ago.
